The federal childcare expense deduction is generally claimed by the lower-income parent and capped at the lesser of the actual expenses, $8,000 per child, and two-thirds of that parent's earned income (exceptions exist under CRA rules). The federal savings are calculated progressively according to the 2026 tax brackets, based on the approximate employment income entered (without accounting for the basic personal amount, RRSP contributions, or other deductions), and take into account Quebec's 16.5% federal abatement applied to basic federal tax.
